‘’How much longer before we land Nathaniel?!’’ Cordelia shouted, trying to be heard over the noise of the small aircraft. Cordelia looked down at Lava Stone Island below her, taking in all the island’s natural beauty. Nathaniel shouted towards Cordelia, ‘’we will be on the north eastern side in about another 7 to 10 minutes; whats your hurry?! Just in enjoy the flight Red.’’ Cordelia studied Nathaniel from the side as she thought to herself,‘’ What was I thinking flying all the way out here with this guy!’’
Cordelia had made arrangements for Nathaniel, the pilot, to fly her to Lava Stone Island. She negotiated a good deal but agreed to Nathaniel's request to accompany her on her journey once they landed.
Once landed, Cordelia immediately started off towards her destination. ‘’Hey, Red, what’s the rush? Why don’t we get something to eat? I hear there are some great restaurants on this side of the island.’’ Nathaniel said this as he helped Cordelia load the rented boat. Cordelia gave Nathaniel an exasperated look, ‘’I have a schedule to keep and I don't want to lose the light of day. Why don't you stay here, and I will see you later this evening.’’ Cordelia said in a strained, pretend pleasant voice.’’
‘’No!, No!, I want to see you barter in action, I want to see the fierce Cordelia Fern work her magic,’’ Nathaniel said in a teasing voice. Cordelia rolled her eyes and continued to load the boat.
As they arrived at their destination, Cordelia took in her surroundings as she stood at the entrance of the dimly lit cave for a moment.
Cordelia saw an older man stooped over coming towards her.‘’ Ms. Fern, you are just in time, the bidding is about to take place, am Greg, my team and I arranged this private bidding.’’ Cordelia extended her hand as she introduced Nathaniel to Greg. ‘’May I see the necklace?’’ Cordelia said in a calm voice. Cordelia had been tracking this particular necklace for months and knew she would have to make a good offer to get it.
Greg retrieved a leather pouch from his pocket and handed it over to Cordelia. She opened the pouch and held the necklace up for inspection.
The smooth polished, vivid blue lapis lazuli shined brightly with the iridescent glow of the freshwater pearls encompassed by brilliant silver hematite. Cordelia was mesmerized by the tassel gemstone necklace. She nearly forgot that she had not made Greg an offer. Greg said in a coarse voice as he rudely snatched the necklace away.
‘’Alright, Fern, how much will you give me for it?!’’ Cordelia narrowed her eyes and prepared herself for the bidding at hand.
‘’Congratulations Red!, I didn’t think you would get that necklace at such a good price!,’’ said Nathaniel. He studied the piece as the small boat made its way back to the mainland of Lava Stone Island. As Cordelia navigated the boat, she looked at Nathaniel with a half-smile and said, ‘’Thank you, and do me a favor... Stop calling me Red!’’ Nathaniel chuckled as he said, ''well, let's celebrate before we fly out. Maybe you can haggle a reasonable price for our dinner.’’
Cordelia docked the boat and unloaded, as the owner of the boat approached her and said, ‘’Welcome back! How was your day further out? I didn't expect you would be back so soon. By the way, this came for you.’’ Cordelia smiled as she took the envelope.
She was surprised to see her name in elegant cursive with an unfamiliar insignia. ‘’What! No one except mom and dad know am out here. What’s going on?’’ Cordelia thought to herself as she tore open the letter to read.
Cordelia smiled brightly as she looked at Nathaniel and back at the owner of the boat upon finishing the letter. ‘’What is it, Red? Did you get offered some high price from one of your richie rich clients?’’ Nathaniel said as he folded his arms with a smug look across his face. Cordelia paused and looked down at the letter before she finally said, ‘’ I have been invited to the annual Gemstone Masquerade Ball!’’ Nathaniel’s face lit up as he said, this really is your lucky day! So when are we going? You know you will need a date, and I am available.’’
